As far as I can recall, nobody here wrote anything about "Good Christians"
being wackos, etc.  The meanness, wacko-ness, and infantility was mainly on
the part of the politicians and other demagogues (yes, including Christian
zealots) who misrepresented poor ol' Piss Christ and the NEA in their
attempts to gain power, airtime, and/or great seats in the afterlife. 

The selection of poor ol' Piss Christ as representative of the NEA is
analogous to taking the cacophagy of GR out of its context and claiming
that it's representative of Pynchon or modern American fiction in general. 
(Hmmmm...maybe there's something to that after all!)  These philistines
tend to do the same kind of thing regarding "the media" whenever they're in
a mildly censorious mood.  If
you'd believe them, you'd never even suspect that art and music classes and
even Christmas concerts get much more public funding than poor ol' Piss
Christ, or that Howard Stern isn't the only "offensive" presence on the
airwaves.
