Don't think your point is muddled. And I agree with it.

"Them" stands for all forces conspiring at the moment
against us (ME),  especially ones going around
saying I'M NOT PARANOID ENOUGH. 

On the other hand (seriously) I would never deny paranoia
its central world position.

Now THAT's muddled.
