Miscellanous: To S. johnson and about Chris Marker

All this talk of WPA, art, and conspiracies reminds me of an article I
read a few months ago in a mainstream newspaper here in Spain that
stated that the CIA had funded and supported the arts, specifically
mentioning the abstract expressionist movement, as a way of showing the
superiority of capitalist society over communism.  Does anybody know
more about this?
