I think reading Pynchon, a-& for that matter any large or difficult, 
book has a negative social effect. One is perceived as bookish,a-& 
if the author is Pynchon, possibly paranoid (or am I just being...). 
Most people couldn't care less about the derivation of a word, let 
alone a character. 

I, for one, would never tell a prospective employer that I spend a 
lotta time reading and, even worse, rereading Pynchon. But then 
again, I don't work in the arts, edu, or a library.
