What can I say Andrew? All I do is read your posts and they often
consist of some kind of on-high pronouncement that several other people
leap to venerate. I'd just like you to know there's infinite variety out
here. And I will admit that your need to correct my list of books written
by women sent up a red flag I haven't been able to ignore--it never
occurred to you that it wasn't a list of books by women: it was a list of
books. It's that inability to see past your own position that so
frequently hog-ties your otherwise obvious intelligence. And ALL the
discussions of American racial prejudice that I recall lately have
included a snotty crack by you about our interest with race stemming from
middle-class obsessions/guilt, etc. I do not think thinking about race is
a sign of my bourgeois naivete, nor would I presume to climb onto a
British list about a British author and commence screaming about how the
things that matter to the people on this list were symptomatic of their
banality. Particularly if my opinions revealed an entire host of
unexamined assumptions regarding what or who deserves
our concern. That's all.
Diana
