1) Heathkits.  First was an AM table radio (tube model, natch; I'm 37),
followed by a shortwave radio, an oscilloscope, a VTVM and a code
oscillator.  Spent more time and had more fun building these gadgets than
actually using them.  Was sad to see the Heath Co. fold its tent, blaming
changes in kids' interests and attention spans.

2) Estes model rockets, esp. "Big Bertha."  I still remember the catalogue
copy: "Slow, realistic take-off...."  Today the number of sexual metaphors
here seems like clever marketing to adolescent boys.

3) HO gauge slot cars by Tyco and Aurora; elaborate speedways in the
basement, trips by bicycle with my friend Matt to buy the latest AF/X cars;
tinkering with the motors; the smell of the electrical burning of oil.
