new book pertinent to CoL49

G'day, everybody.  Been out of the loop here for a while (not just 
the usual reasons like work & music & writing but also apartment 
hunting & moving, that nightmarish Manhattan experience that I hope 
not to experience too many more times), so I don't know whether 
anybody's mentioned this yet, but I've heard of a new book that may 
be of interest to anyone writing about Lot 49, communication theory, 
evolving postal practices, and the like.  It's John Durham Peters, 
_Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication_ (U 
Chicago, 1999).  The excerpt at the U. Chi. Press website is
