Well, I managed to slip through the Falun Gong dragnet, although in my
China travels I was taken to task more than once for the bombing of the
embassy in Belgrade and heard enough conspiracy theories about that
atrocity to make Pynchon's head spin. While I didn't find any Chinese
translations of TRP's works I did receive quite a few offers to purchase
counterfeit software from the touts at "Book City" in Beijing's Haidian
district; given the surprisingly high-level English skills I enountered
among the English majors at the university campus where I stayed for a
couple of weeks in Beijing, I predict it won't be too many more years
before we see Chinese versions of GR or other TRP novels. Thanks to Max
Dudious for the introduction, in addition to spending a wonderful afternoon
of conversation at Youyi Binguan, I saw one of the few existing copies of
the authoritative Chinese translation of James Joyce's _Ulysses_.
