Yes, I agree, Lolita's pain was "real"--we were made to feel
it--especially later in the book. One instance I remember particularly was
where Humbert seems almost to feel it too. Says something to the effect:
You see the  little darling had no place else go. (This is not an actual
quote but an approximation of what I remember.)
