although most of it had already been torn down, the remaining structure of the
crystal palace (the one in london, england) was demolished during the black-outs
preceding the battle of britain. hence the text Doug cited...

of course, imho, only a fool would deny that TRP alludes to the european
jewish-slav-gyspy-physically challenged-socially deviant-politically opposed-etc
holocaust of wwii in more than one way & on more than one level. but why he's
doing this still eludes me. 

i rather doubt that his intent was an apology to anyone he may have offended
with his jewish girls and rhinoplasty stuff in V... (btw - can anyone cite any
other instances where TRP's viewpoint as expressed in his novels might be
perceived as not-necessarily-pro-semitic?).

 Doug suggests that the state of public knowledge about the corporate complicity
and support for the 3rd reich circa 1973 was somewhat lacking. so TRP is trying
to tell us that nazis and multi-national corpos are bad stuff? i can think of
much, much, much, much more efficient ways to spread this message than Gravity's
Rainbow. 

now what if TRP were using the holocaust as a metaphor for
(nuclear-or-otherwise) armageddon (... and armageddon as a metaphor for the big
crunch (as a metaphor for the end of all universes (as a metaphor for the death
of god (as?...))))..))) ... fish eating fish eating fish eating fish eating...
usw)?
