"All the others were drinking it & pretending that everything was
alright. But it wasn't! This melted toothpaste with synthetic
imitations of herbs is the most terrible thing I ever tasted: Felt so
sick & dizzy!"
I never really thought about root beer being an acquired taste. As for
"synthetic imitations of herbs," actually made correctly it is fairly
natural - made from tree bark or some such - though I'm sure it has
been synthetically produced, too. The real stuff (or fairly close to
it) is generally emblazoned with "all natural" or "real." A favorite
hard candy is root beer flavored and shaped to look like little barrels
- no soft center surprises, though, except there is a gum that has this
which at one time at least came in a root beer flavor (the gum was
nasty). Since the temperature where I am reached a heat index of about
105 F the last couple days, my salvation has been root beer flavored
Italian Ice, which is sort of like sherbet or sourbet. A local
pizzeria makes their own. It is simple, smooth, sweet, cold, and
delicious - an orgasmic experience during a heat wave (don't eat it too
fast or you get a headache, there are probably "urban legends" about
freeze out comas and strokes). I think you probably had a bad brand of
the stuff.
