Kai reminds us that US soft drinks are an acquired taste.

I agree with Michael that it depends on the brand. It also matters
whether you get it out of a bottle at some 7-Eleven, or in a nice frosty
mug (as served at Coits in Okie City--one of the very few sensual
pleasures my long-ago home town serves up) with thick brown frost all
over the inside. It helps to be 92 w/ high humidity at the time.

Somewhat against the "American" grain, I acquired a taste for carbonated
mineral water in Poland--then gagged and spewed one day when I was
served some from Georgia, with salt in it! 

A-and, those root beer barrels top anything Slothrop suffered through,
IMHO. . . .
