GRGR(5): sources on metaphor and allegory

Appropos of rj's comments it's interesting that metaphor and metonymy are
used in connection with Freudian dreamwork--in the translating  from
latent to manifest content.  I read somewhere that whereas Jakobson saw
both displacement and condensation as metonymy, Lacan had condensation as
metaphor and displacement as metonymy.

I was amazed when I first started paying some attention to litcrit talk
the extent to which it utilized  the classic rhetorical figures that the
high school (Jesuit) I went to in the forties drummed into our heads and I
had miraculously retained knowledge of. (of course it stands to reason)
