Doug insists that we take Pynchon's jacket blurbs and essays as
expressions of his opinions. That Pynchon is a serious writer, not some
guy churning it out just for the money.
Well, in Al Franken's _Why Not Me?_, he describes the creation of _Rush
Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot_:
"...our writer's room consisting of Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Pynchon and [Isaac
Bashevis] Singer, who was, frankly, deadwood, but he was old and needed
the money, would pound out a rough draft. Then, I would look it over.
"Vonnegut and Punchon did commendable work, and even old Singer would get
a line or two in now and then. But they weren't funny, at least not
ha-ha- laugh-out-loud funny...There was only one solution: I would have
to write the book myself."
