I can't help but wonder what it might have been like to grow up during
WWII. My mother was born a few years before TRP, so she was an older child
as the War claimed American mass culture; born in '37, TRP would have been
a toddler when war broke out in Europe, a tiny Home Front soldier as he was
learning to read and write.  "What was it like? Before the war?" Jessica
asks at the bottom of page 58; it's not difficult to imagine a child who
grew up in the shadow of WWII asking such a question. What's surprising,
perhaps, is Roger's question in return:  "girly, it depends *which* war you
*mean*." (59.6)  What would a Poisson plot of wars fought around the globe
during TRP's lifetime might look like? The War never has stopped.
