Hi,
my name is Lars and I´m new on this List.

Here in Germany Pynchon is rather unknown, so everytime I find myself
talking to somebody about him and his works, nobody has ever heard of
him. Well, that´s bad enough, but if you ever tried explaining the Plot
of, say, Gravity´s Rainbow, to somebody, you probably know the
reactions... At least people are sympathetic when you´re actually on
LSD and not just talking like you would be.
So imagine my thrill when I found this site! Now I know what Crusoe
felt like, when he met Friday. (Well maybe not quite, but over the last
years I felt more and more like the only P-Reader in the world.).
Anyway, right now I´m too overwhelmed to say much, but there´s one
question that has been on my mind for quite a while: Is it hard for
non-german-speakers to understand the kraut-dialogs in Gravity´s
Rainbow? I´d like to hear about your experiences!

By the way, P´s german is rather faulty. He gets the words right most
of the time, but his grasp of the grammar is not quite so hot. Which is
to say nothing bad about him, because german grammar is pretty hard,
but then again a lot of Proof-Readers here in the Zone would be
unemployed, if it wouldn´t be so.

I think I´ll be looking for examples for this „weird german" I
mentioned, and if anyone is interested I could mail a list of examples.

Bye,
Lars (improfane at yahoo.com)
