Coming in on the elevated train with 'Rhythm's Got Me' playing over the
clickety clack is the cinematic opening to Slothrop's 'jazz daze' scene.
Slothrop's pursuit of the harmonica is the first act that sets him apart
from the other white boys. His commitment to following it down the
toilet, knowing what Red and his friends will do to his defenseless white
butt hanging out up there will transform the jive accessory into an
emblem of his true identity.
'Follow? Red, the Negro shoeshine boy, waits by his dusty leather seat.
The Negroes all over wasted Roxbury wait.' - They're not all waiting for
Slothrop are they? Some are waiting for Red, right? To drop his jive
accessories and start his real work.
-Neil
