Thanks. I'm assuming also that Monaco's status as an independent
principality was intact for some time before (and since) the Axis
Occupation. So, after moving "beyond the zero" in the first section, now
we've got a pass to limboland.

The blithe acceptance (the characters', ours) of the name of the casino,
and those kitsch seashells, is unnerving. Have we also moved from the
realm of repression and control into one of outright hedonism and
ambivalence, as the war's inevitable outcome looms?
