I finally found it: extremely large temporal bandwidth
- - the consciousness of stone.
Cobble(r)s to that. There are going to be rocks who live for the moment
(one entity's millennium is another's ...) and those that take the long -
epochal -perspective. If temporal bandwidth has any meaning it is subject
to the lifetime of the being.
Remember Zelazny's short story The Great Slow Kings.
"Bring us some of those little creatures which we just noticed..."
"Sorry your majesty they became extinct a few moments ago"
Zelazny also told a tale of a sentient rock: Collector's Fever.
