My flip answer: the answer to the question "Is it OK to be a Luddite" is
not "in essence yes" (as we read in the Village Voice article), the answer
is the essay that Pynchon wrote, which can in no way be distilled into a
yes (or a no) without losing everything that makes Pynchon's own answer the
nuanced and subtle exploration that it is. "Distrust of technology" is also
dangerously over-simplifying. Technology is inextricably part of the world
Pynchon depicts and engenders a rainbow of responses that includes
distrust.
I get so tired of these knee-jerk encapsulations of Pynchon, too,
especially the gratuitous reference to "acute paranoia" in this Village
Voice essay.
