Demeter
The Greek earth goddess par excellence, who brings forth the fruits of the
earth, particularly the various grains. She taught mankind the art of sowing
and ploughing so they could end their nomadic existence. As such, Demeter
was also the goddess of planned society. She was very popular with the rural
population. As a fertility goddess she is sometimes identified with Rhea and
Gaia.
SNIP
In ancient art, Demeter was often portrayed (sitting) as a solemn woman,
often wearing a wreath of braided ears of corn. Well-known is the statue
made by Knidos (mid forth century BC). Her usual symbolic attributes are the
fruits of the earth and the torch, the latter presumably referring to her
search for Persephone. Her sacred animals were the snake (an earth-creature)
and the pig (another symbol of fertility). Some of her epithets include
Auxesia, Deo, Chloe, and Sito. The Romans equated her with the goddess
Ceres.

>>Does he give any scholarly support for such rediculous claims,
Don't you mean "clams?"

If such "speculation" undermines "true progress" in "real hard" feminist
progess, then such "progress" seems shaky indeed. In which camp does _The
White Goddess_ fall in your opinion?
Dissing Campbell is no less fashionable, and very easy to do. Dissing in
general is very easy... Actually contributing, OTOH...
>>Good scholarship is not trendy or speculative. How Thesmophoria, to name
>>one example, is adopted by so called western religion and christians is a
>>good example of why you should not jump on the trend my friend.
As opposed to the Eleusinian Mysteries? If your statement above was meant
to convey a logical point, it sure failed to connect the dots
>>Speculations about why Hemingway cut his hair or didn't, why Pynchon is
>>not Roth or Updike, are just that, speculations, but to make sweeping
>>generalizations about pigs/women power and proscription is only going
>>cause some left-brains to jump on the wagon and some right-brains to

To each his own, but I'd say your objections rest on a mound of insecurity.
