"Street Level" is the tenth special issue we've published here at FEED, and it
marks a departure for us on a number of fronts. While the content of this issue
will be familiar to longtime FEED readers, we have decided to experiment more
with the design and the technology of the format. We wanted to make "Street
Level" as fun to explore as it is to read not unlike a city itself -- and to
make it a launching point for other urban explorations. We've invited six
acclaimed authors and journalists (Jefferson Chase, George Saunders, Daniel
Halpern, and others) to ruminate on a city block of their choosing; each
mini-essay is accompanied by a QuickTime VR panorama that captures the scene in
a 360-degree tableau. Erik Baard reports on the brave new frontier of urban
mapping; Andrey Slivka rides the rails and celebrates the mysterious,
revitalized civilizations of northern New Jersey; Geoff Dyer describes an
unlikely renaissance in Detroit, Michigan; Amanda Griscom interviews legendary
architect and designer William McDonough; and we've assembled a survey of ten
epic urban infrastructure projects: five that were dreamt of, but never built,
and five that are currently underway. Enjoy!
