According to Jules Siegal's bio-article from way back when,
Pynchon's mother was
a staunch Catholic and the children were all raised in the
church.  Siegal also
describes the young Pynchon as a devoutly practicing
Catholic during his Cornell
days, at least.  And, given the cult of the Baby Jesus in
Catholicism, many a
Catholic boy grows up to (shall we say) resent the
miraculous tyke -- easy to see
why.  
 

Remember Heff and Gnossos snatch the Baby and the Virgin
from the manger in BDSL. Farina was a Catholic boy too.
