This seems to reference a conversation that I can't find in the text.  I 
also remember an earlier reference to "Geli's clue," (but I'm not sure where 
that was) which again seems to reference a conversation outside the text.  
This is a strange device isn't it?  What would be Pynchon's purpose here?
