high-level government officials makes his own unofficial changes in his
translations.

_The History of the Siege of Lisbon_ by Jose Saramago:  a translator of an
history of the siege introduces his own new information and sets off an
alternative history.

I read both of these novels last year and enjoyed them. In addition to
exploring the nuances of translation and interpretation, each features a
wonderful love story. Highly recommended.
