You're thinking of "Shadow of a Doubt". I wonder whether or not this is
intentional on the Coens' part, given the niece-Charlie-like innocence of Birdy
Abundas (an ideal for Ed Crane whose destruction near the end with Birdy's, um,
unexpected behavior in the car foreshadows Ed's demise). Ed himself is not
unlike Uncle Charlie--an unremarkable man who manipulates and deceives without
many qualms. Anyways, not a very close parallel, but perhaps it was done in
homage to Hitchcock.
