I think Americans try to approximate the foreign sounds more than the British,
who tend to Anglicize  more.

In the U.S.,  the proper name  "Nez Perce"  (written without the accent) is
Anglicized,  but "pince nez" meaning the kind of glasses that are clipped to the
nose is pronounced  like pans nay.
