" fact that it seems to be two or three months old and didn't surface
anywhere else
- except on this list, of course - certainly gives due cause to doubt its
relevance, at least, if not indeed its authenticity."
This doesn't make much sense.
The interview has been published in Playboy Japan, there's no doubt about
that. Assuming just for a moment that this is the first time in 40 years
that Pynchon has broken his silence (I don't agree with that statement, by
the way, but admit it for the sake of argument here despite the many times
that Pynchon has "spoken" in his own voice outside of his fiction), surely
that would be "relevant".
It hasn't become Page 1 news may be explained in part by the relative
paucity of journalists outside Japan who can read Japanese, I suppose.
Lots of American celebrities appear in the strangest situations in Japanese
media without comment on same back here at home -- I suspect that has more
to do with the inward gaze of the typical mass media US journalist than
with the "relevance" of any given story.
Whats' the connection between the lack of news about the Pynchon interview
in Playboy Japan and whether or not the interview is authentic?
Should we assume that you're just going to continue to throw potshos and
not dig up any support for your debunking claims?
