A-and it's true that some irony can be found in the fact that each of his
error-laden stories was accepted for publication, building the foundation
for the idea of Pynchon as a significant literary groundbreaker. As the
list at the back of the book puts it: Cornell Writer (March 1959), New
World Writing (March 1960), Kenyon Review (Spring 1960), The Noble Savage 3
(May 1961), The Saturday Evening Post (December 1964).
On the other hand, it seems to me that he did try to work harder on Ear,
character, etc. in his post-1984 fiction.
