Writing well is not a matter of personal taste or
preference. To write well and communicate ideas an
author needs to construct effective sentences and
paragraphs. Clarity, conciseness, and vividness are
not matters of subjective judgement.

What does "writing
> well" mean, in the end, except that the writing
pleases one reader according to one set of criteria
while it might not please another reader judging by
other criteria. There's no objective standard by which
to evaluate literature.

It's not simply a matter of pleasure. To effectively
communicate with others one needs to write well. Good
writing may please the reader or not. Good writers
also learn to recognize and reject the irresponsible,
cloudy, or dishonest language of others.
