I'm not sure why you would construct this either / or. 

Either it destroys or it creates? Better that these religious ideas
create and not murder, but we're only human and there is always time for
both. What matter if human voices wake us or the words of prophets or
gods? We are all going to drown anyway.

If you have a copy of A Gravity's Rainbow Companion by Steven
Weisenburger take a look at page 263. Weisenburger is pretty good on
this stuff.
