<< I don't think the political worldview reflected in
Vineland can be dismissed as easily as that. Pynchon
didn't have to update it much, if at all, in the
foreword to _1984_ to make it relevant "circa 2003".
The times, like a carousel, go 'round and 'round. From
the 4D perspective, however, it's a helix. VL, doesn't
"match up" across the void with _1984_ the way 2003
does- given current events. That doesn't mean the
resonances and allusions aren't there.
<<His critique of Nixon/Reagan/Bush -- and we're still
under Bush -- remains as accurate as it is
cartoonishly hilarious.>>
That's the type of lazy, if not thoughtless, propagandizing
that serves reactionary interests well, and leads to this
type of analysis, for example:

Herbert and Walker, and their respective times and presidencies,
are very much different. A little thinking goes a long way.
<<The Tube is all that, and
more. The War that never ends still hasn't ended, and
the fat cats just get fatter from war profits. The
recovery movement is bigger than ever, cults
proliferate, Bible-thumping born-again Christians
occupy the White House... & etc. ...>>
More sloganeering. You're saying: nothing has changed?
You old "bush vet," you. Where were you when the kids
were in the streets sucking up tear gas, burning down
draft boards, trying to stop the troop trains moving
inexorably toward the beast in the jungle- dreaming of
the great works of marketing you would pen when peace
finally arrived?
<<Looking forward to your insights into _Vineland_.>>
Thank you So much. I knew you'd understand.
