Pynchon (you wrote) compares what the two dopers (as I
read them) do to "a game critics like to play, worth
maybe a minute and a half of diversion ..."

I agree that Pynchon might have more affection for
these bozos than Rob allows, but that's not the same
as saying he agrees with them, hard to see him saying
that something worth maybe a minute and a half is an
observation of them hitting on "the essence of
things."

He also says that prediction and prophesy (which they
are confusing) "are not quite the same, and it would
ill serve writer and reader alike to confuse them in
Orwell's case."

Not a ringing endorsement.
