I liked Lost in Translation a lot, too; having spent
quite a bit of time in Japan on business (once as a
guest of Sony Music), the movie captures that
experience well. Kill Bill plays with the same Hong
Kong action flick elements that Vineland does, which
makes it of particular interest to readers of that
novel.

Our sushi chef at lunch today did a great Sonny Chiba.

Secret history and conspiracy fans will like Gold
Warriors, a new book that digs into what happened to
the gold and other treasure the Japanese sucked out of
Asia during its imperial spree and how the gold helped
the US pursue its anti-democratic Cold War dirty
tricks -- its picture of the way the US military,
government, and CIA worked together with unreformed
Japanese war criminals and yakuza make good
counterpoint for Vineland, too. I'm about half-way
through it and having fun. Your mileage may vary, of
course.
