I think Stevens signed support for something in general that was later taken out of context by some fanatics who did support the fatwa and used his signature as pr. He says he never supported a fatwa.  It may still look like back-pedaling to some but I'm not so sure.

Meanwhile, watching a bit more of the news since, I retract my knee-jerk sympathy.
