° It was Lichtenberg who once said: When a book and a head
collide and it sounds hollow, it's not necessarily the
book's fault ... Some context-knowledge about German history
as well as about Nietzsche could enrich your understanding.
Perhaps also "Die Entstehung des Doktor Faustus. Roman eines
Romans" [1949] (The Formation of Doctor Faustus. Novel of a
Novel), in which Mann, pretty pomo here, writes about the
book's genesis. Didn't you like the submarine trip?

PS. Myself I'm reading novel by novel from Hubert Fichte's
"Die Geschichte der Empfindlichkeit", these days "EXPLOSION.
Roman der Ethnologie", where Fichte's alter ego Jäcki reports
about the three travels to Brazil (1968/9, 1971/2, 1981/2) he
made with his wife and photographer Irma to study Afro-american
religions, especially Candomblé and Umbanda. Follows an outtake:
Anlage, halb Kalvarienberg, halb Minigolf.
Betonkreuz, Schule, Kirche mit Barockeinschlag, eckiges Privathaus, Sägewerk, Favelahütte, Ziegelei, Gemüsegarten.
Manuel Araujo empfängt uns in seinem Büro.
Er und seine Gehilfen tragen die blauen Uniformen von südamerikanischen Admirälen in einer Ausstattungsoperette;
