Agree, except about the Balkans - I didn't find those sections very rich at 
all (though of course U reserve the right to adjust that opinion on second 
reading), and I'll cast my vote that Pynchon definitely has not been to 
Sarajevo. Speaking of which, perhaps Pynchon is the only author for whom it 
doesn't seem odd to feature Franz Ferdinand as a character, set a segment of 
the novel in the Balkans, including Sarajevo, yet not feature the 
assassination.
