ATD interpreting "Now single up all lines!" WAS Re: AtD 146 lines (spoiled)

Looking at the possible multiple meanings of the words
in a text is a standard interpretive move, part of the
traditional "explication du texte" method that I
believe French schoolchildren are still taught (my son
learned it in French school just a few years ago). 
One of the first things to do is look up in the
dictionary any words the critic might not know, and
examine them for meanings and past usages that might
come into play in the text at hand. It's a risky
endeavor, no doubt.
