Pynchon and baseball

There have been a bunch of baseball films, mostly not particularly  
noteworthy. One that I liked very much was "Bang the Drum Slowly". I  
don't claim that it will give you any deep understanding of the  
mystique of baseball, but I think it does reveal a bit of the reality  
of the behind the scenes life.
