Perhaps worth recalling that Apocalyse Now is a
postmodernist take on Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
However, I was thinking more of the way the
reader/subject is positioned by the text. What comes
to mind here is Hitchcock's films, where one is often
encouraged to root for the so-called villain. Also: I
think Psycho was mentioned recently. In that film the
positioning of the spectator is vital to the way we
are distanced from Marion, prepared for the 'shocking'
way the film's protagonist is suddenly removed.
Something similar, I think, happens in the current
chapter of AtD to prepare us for the removal of Webb:
not the protagonist, but certainly a central
character.
