Kit comes home and finds his father hostile to the deal. His father
thinks "It's me the're after, son". (104.35), and Kit has to take the
consequence of his choice, according to Webb:
(105.14) "You're either my boy or theirs, can't be both". Kit, however
sticks to his decision, and trespasses a limit: "Oh, ain't I? (105.16),
and that settles it --on the surface.
Mayva tries to interfere, but can't influence Webb.
So it is goodbye at the station. Only Kitt and Mayva are there. Even
here, mother and son together are mother and son alone.
No wonder that some town trainwatchers swear, "like that they'd seen the
track shift" (104.20)
Damage irrepairable?
Michel.
