Should have read:  So there's the two poles of love - hate in 
addition to the irresistible animal magnetism of sex.  Deuce knew 
what he'd done, perhaps in the same predicament,  and went ahead 
anyway he has less of an "excuse" than Lake who didn't really "know." 
-  what is knowing?
