860.Power shifted from a saintly symbol of the Republic of Venice itself to The Arsenal "double" and "the bleak certainties of military science".....vs. "less confident human struggles toward republican virtue"............I think this contrast is so superbly stated; so superbly contrasts
  an obvious Pynchon hatred, military science, seen his special way--as bleak certainties...vs.
  part of his vision of 'the human'......less confident struggles toward virtue...................
