Somewhat stranded on the northern edge of Castello, the church of San Francesco della Vigna (daily 8am noon & 3.307pm; free) takes its name from the vineyard that was here when the Franciscans were given the site in 1253.

Uh...let's have some deep thoughts on this: A Franciscan Church, where an angel visited St. Mark it is alleged, becomes the new 'relocation of power" by a sort of coup by the Arsenale replacing the Palazzzo Ducale....????
