Master of Petersburg

Well, if by "fun read" you mean that "Diary of a Bad Year" is not quite 
as grim as Coetzee's other novels...

I enjoyed "The Master of Petersburg". The novel stands on its own merits 
but I agree with Bekah that it helps a lot if you have read some of 
Dostoevsky's novels, especially  "The Possessed", and are familiar with 
a few aspects of his life. The novel by Coetzee that to me seems to bear 
the most resemblance to Pynchon's concerns and some of his techniques 
(in "V.") is "Dusklands". I am still very grateful to the list member 
(cfa?) who once recommended the book . It was my introduction to a great 
writer.
