Well I guess I enjoy "grim" a bit. But "Diary" isn't really grim
except in the somewhat sober and subtle acknowledgements that the
elder author's days and powers are waning, and that death is somewhere
off in the wings. But...

...I gotta admit that the hot babe's implied role as the author's
future pschopomp was a clunker for me. NOT subtle.
"Dusklands" was also my first exposure to Coetzee, also from the
recommendation from someone on this list, whom I also can't recall.
Very good and very dark.
