A-and..........I think that that wiki analysis overlooks this: there is still light enough to see reflected light after the sun has set.............and light-colored balloons with 'flanks" would reflect light that we could see move with movement of the earth and the earth's shadow 
   
  What am i missing here?

  if they were balloons......ground level or higher....same thing until the shdow fell, yes?
