turns out it is in Pynchon Notes 2:6 1980, Marcus Smith "V and Maltese Falcon"
Chandler is simply richer, yes?...Hammett was JUST more or less first. No small achievement.
I heard Macdonald's voice coming thru in Lew in AtD....of course, he got a lot of his voice from Chandler.
