I'd look at how much of a Don Quixote Philip Marlowe is and apply the  
same template to Doc. Marlowe is a "Knight Errant" just as much as Doc  
or the Don. The actual physical location of Chandler's novels serves  
pretty much the same purpose as Pynchon's locales. Both are zones of  
lawlessness maintained by "the law." Bay City and Gordita Beach are  
very similar and only about ten miles away from each other.
