Sorry if this gets your dander up. You of course always have the  
option of ignoring me.

Something to consider—Pynchon's notion of Gnosticism [and I'm certain  
Terrance will have issues with my take on what Pynchon clearly points  
to in his texts] is wrapped around visionary experience. This is  
rendered in a quite explicit fashion in "Against the Day" in the way  
Sir William Rowan Hamilton "receives" Quaternions in a vision, much as  
Rilke [another Idee fixe of Pynchon's] "receives" the opening lines of  
the Duino Elegies. Think of "The White Visitation" and Madame Eskimoff  
in this light.
